I am sure you will be more than aware of what the Renters’ Rights bill largely includes by now, but if you needed a refresher of where we are at you can check my latest article here.
Some new dates have surfaced, so I thought I would put together a brief update as the next few weeks are likely to be a busy one for the bill!
I have received notification that the next stage has been scheduled for July, with peers in the House of Lords having until 26th June to table amendments. Officially, the report stage which is the next step will take place in the House of Lords over three days on 1st, 7th and 15th of July. It’s over these three days when members get the chance to vote on the bill.
Following this, we then have a third reading which gives another chance for discussion and amendments before going back to the House of Commons where amendments can be rejected or proposed, then back to the House of Lords (this is known as ‘ping pong’) until the bill is agreed.
Several articles I have read comment that there is a prospect that the bill could actually become law before the parliamentary summer recess on 22nd July, however I do think that this is unlikely. It will certainly be interesting to see what amendments are accepted or rejected by the Commons.
This progress does, however, raise the very likely prospect that the bill will be finalised and passed into law by the end of the year. With this being such a significant change to legislation, I will be closely keeping an eye on how it is to be implemented.
With implementation in mind, I would like to think that there will be some form of timeline such as applying to new tenancies from X and existing tenancies from Y. It certainly (you would have thought) won’t apply from the day it passes into law!
